The US regulatory agency FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has just approved the marketing of silicone breast implants manufactured by Brazil’s Silimed. The Brazilian company, which has been in business for 33 years and exports to more than 60 countries, met all of the agency’s demands and requirements to get the permission to sell in the US territory.
Silimed, in partnership with Sientra, will be the only company in the US to sell prostheses in the format of a “drop” (round and anatomical), which is perceived to produce a more “natural result” – the other two companies in the market (being one of them Allergan) are only authorized to sell “round” prostheses. “It is the consolidation of Silimed as the third largest manufacturer of silicone implants in the world, and without being an American company,” says company director Margaret Figueiredo. “This will benefit patients and plastic surgeons, who now have more options,” she adds.
