Eike Batista’s dream of surpassing Mexican magnate Carlos Slim to become the richest man in the world seems to be increasingly distant. After occupying the seventh position on Bloomberg’s billionaire rankings a couple of months ago, the Brazilian businessman appears this week at the 14th spot with a fortune estimated at US$23.4 billion (see below). It was only last March, however, when his fortune was estimated at US$34.5 billion. Carlos Slim, the richest man in the world, has a fortune of US$ 69.1 billion.
Eike’s “X” firms face a bad day today. OGX, Batista’s oil company cut its first project production targets by as much as 75 percent. OGX shares dropped by almost 30% on the Bovespa, which has cost Brazil’s richest man about US$11 billion of his fortune.
